Salvador Dali

dalipic.jpg (25224 bytes)"Every morning when I wake up I experience an exquisite joy—the joy of being Salvador Dalí—and I ask myself in rapture, ‘What wonderful things this Salvador Dalí is going to accomplish today?’" —Salvador Dalí.

On Salvador Dali's definition of "What is art?".."The day I discovered the key to art I fell to my knees and thanked God. With both knees on the ground! And hands together!  The truth lies not in any shape but in a geometric locus that is the same for all curved shapes of the human body; I discovered this golden rule at the rounded point of the heaven swept cone of the rhinoceros horn. You can find it for yourself. The point is to apply this inquisitorial mathematics with an implacable rigor that alone can give rebirth to great painting." Leonardo da Vinci agreed with Euclid that the egg was the most perfect of shapes; to Ingres, the sphere was ideal; Cézanne put his faith only in the cube and cylinder.

Amand Durand
In the 1600's Rembrandt created his exquisite etchings, those noted world wide for their delicacy of tone and intricacy of detail. Rembrandt sold the plates to a prestigious European family with the stipulation that nothing could be printed until 100 years after his death. The family honored this agreement but by the 1800's the plates were very worn and flat. Amand Durand, a French engraver born in Paris in 1831, spent the major part of his life exactly duplicating the genius of Rembrandt onto copper plates, achieving incredible quality through his own technical genius. Thus it is said that we get a master duplicating a master 200 years later.

Friz Freleng accepting his Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, 1992
Warner Brothers
In an illustrious career that has spanned nearly 63 years, Friz Freleng was involved in nearly all aspects of animation. As a creator, director and producer, he created or contributed to many of the most memorable and award winning cartoons ever produced.

Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Freleng moved to Hollywood as head animator of Warner Bros. "Looney Tunes" and "Merry Medley" cartoons.

He animated the first Warner Bros. cartoon ever released, "Stinkin in the bathtub" (1930) and directed his first cartoon "Bosko Dutch" (1933)

Freleng remained at Warner Bros. for 33 years. During this time, he was a major developer of  Warner Bros. characters, producing and directing over 300 cartoons featuring Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd and others. In addition he created Porky Pig, Yosemite Sam and Sylvester. Clearly evident of all Freleng's cartoons was a unique talent for synchronizing the visual gag and the accompanying background music. While at Warner Bros., Freleng was honored with Academy Awards for four shorts: "Tweety Pie" (1947), "Speedy Gonzales" (1955), "Birds Anonymous" (1957) and "Knight Knight Bugs" (1958). He was nominated for seven others. In 1963, Freleng teamed up with David DePatie to form DePatie-Freleng Enterprises, which produced shorts for Warner Bros. and became the leading independent production company in the areas of animated film production, television specials and commercials. In 1980, Freleng became a Senior Executive Producer where he produced 3 feature-length films incorporating his classic animated shorts along with new animated sequences: "The Looney, Looney, Looney Bugs Bunny Movie" (1981), "Bugs Bunny's 1001 Rabbit Tales" (1982) and "Daffy Duck's Movie: Fantastic Island" (1983).

Freleng was the recipient of many prestigious awards: in 1981, he was honored by both the American Film Institute and The British Film Institute with major retrospectives of his work. Also that year, the Chicago International Film Festival presented him with their Hugo Award for his Arts and Sciences and paid tribute to him at a gala that featured nine of his most famous cartoons. In 1985, The New York Museum of Modern Art honored Freleng as part of their Golden Anniversary Salute to Warner Bros. Animation. In August of 1992, Freleng was honored with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Freleng continued to be a major contributor to the art of animation until his passing on May 26th of 1995, at the age of  89. Cities worldwide continue to honor Freleng with film festivals, museum exhibitions and retrospectives.

In this hand painted field limited edition cel from award winning director Friz Freleng, sheriff Tweety Bird challenges Sylvester the Cat to get out of town.
In 1982 legendary Warner Brothers director and animator Friz Freleng began creating a special collection of Limited Edition animation cels. A Limited Edition cel is a re-creation of an original production cel or a hand tailored cel depicting a favorite character in a special scene. Mr. Freleng personally developed and drew the original master art for each of his Limited Editions. The cel image is  hand-inked on an original master cel. Silk-screened ink lines are then created from the master for each of the limited edition pieces. In traditional animation style, the cels are turned over and hand painted on the back using animation cel paint. The hand painted background image is then photographically reproduced to insure the best color and reproductive quality. Each piece has a studio seal and is signed by Friz Freleng.

Linda Le Kinff

l_lekinff.jpg (26114 bytes)
Linda Le Kinff with clients
Linda Le Kinff was born in Paris from French and Brazilian parents. She started her career as a painter at the age of 20. In the 1970s she traveled to India, Tibet, Mexico and Italy. She lived and worked in Italy for twelve years learning ancient techniques: tempura, egg painting and the gold leaf method taught by masters in Florence and
Livorno. She also served an apprenticeship in wood engraving, copper engraving, as well as learning the modern techniques of acrylic and airbrushing.

In Paris, in 1975 she learned lithography; meeting the artists Brayer, Corneille and Lapique. In 1976 she met Okamoto Taro, the Japanese Picasso, who introduced her to sand and sumi technique. In 1981 she spent six months in Morocco where she worked with Chabia, the poetess of the naďve abstraction movement.

She returned to school in south Tyrol, where she became interested in painted, polished and varnished woodwork, using a special material made of casein. She applied it to her painting but still kept the classic expression on canvas.

Le Kinff also expresses herself through watercolors or, more precisely, a mixing of greasy pastels, ink and watercolors. Just recently she began to use collage. She works without a model and her inspiration comes from travel, dreams, reading and imagination. Her influences include the secret sensuality of Braque, the drawing of Matisse, the elegance of Modigliani and the maturity of Egon Schiele, who died at the age of 28.

Linda Le Kinff has exhibited widely in Europe, Australia and Japan.

Robert McKimson

mckimson2.jpg (13977 bytes) Robert McKimson's animation career began in 1928 at Walt Disney Studios. He started there as an assistant but only remained there for a short time. In 1930 he joined Harmon-Ising as an animator. Harmon-Ising evolved to Leon Schlesinger's studio which was eventually acquired by Warner Brothers. Thus, from 1930 until the animation studio temporarily stopped making shorts in 1963, he animated and directed hundreds of cartoons for Warner Brothers. He became a director in the mid 1940's with his first picture, "Daffy's Doodles" being released in 1946. In all he directed 175
cartoons for Warner Brothers, and introduced 5 major characters: Foghorn Leghorn, Hippety Hopper, Sylvester Jr.,  the original Speedy Gonzalez and the Tazmanian Devil. During the 1940's he was the studio's principal model-sheet maker which strongly influenced  Warner's overall graphic identity.

About 1943 he made revisions to his previous model-sheet of Bugs Bunny that created the definitive look of Bugs that is now universal. In addition he drew the now famous pose of Bugs Bunny leaning on a tree with a carrot, poised for chomping. At one point during the 1940's, McKimson and his brothers, Tom and Charles, all worked together at Warner Brothers. After the animation studio temporarily stopped making shorts in 1963, McKimson directed various theatricals as well as commercials and titles. He passed away suddenly in 1977 while working at his first love - the direction of  animation.

Robert McKimson was an unpretentious man who never got the same attention as his contemporaries. In some ways, in spite of his achievements, the was "The Forgotten Director" at Warner Brothers Cartoons. In order to memorialize him, various original drawings and scenes from cartoons he directed are being reproduced into limited edition form.

Marcel Mouly

Marcel Mouly To find a creative spirit of moving proportions is rare. To find works of art that sweep the senses into new emotional awareness is to know the mark of a master.

Marcel Mouly is that creative spirit, and the mark of his work is an ad-

venture into the magical realm of sight beyond words, into the world of mood so poignant it thickens with colour.

Mouly was born in Paris in 1918. Although he had an interest in drawing as a youth, he never pursued a career in art until the hand of destiny reached into his life in 1942. Having been mistaken for a spy by the Germans he was placed into a concentration camp for one year, and it was during this confinement he made the decision to secure his creative freedom forever through a career in art.

In 1943 he encountered Pignon and was given his first showing of two paintings at the Salon d'Automne in Paris. From there his professional career took shape, fostered and encouraged by some of the greatest artists of this century.

The genius of his artistry took form in the smoky nights and brilliant shadows of an era influenced by the art of Braque, Matisse and Picasso, with whom he walked as a young man in the halls of the French  Academies. He was befriended by the great sculptor, Jacques Lipchitz, who became his mentor and an influence on his work through his approach to cubism. Yet, none of the fervour of the new artistic languages, though melded with skill into the reach of his creativity, supersedes the inner vision he so adeptly portrays.

At 75 years of age, Mouly has achieved monumental acclaim with works in 22 museums, including the Musée Nationale d'Art Moderne, the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris and the Musée de Genčve in Switzerland. He has been honored with two of France's highest awards, the Chevalier de L'Ordre des Arts et Lettres in 1957 and the Premier Prix de Lithographie in 1973.

Roy Tonkin
Roy Tonkin, born in 1959, began his fascination with shapes, myths and figures at the age of 12 after reading Tolkien. At West Surrey College of Art and at the Bath Academy where he studied pottery and printmaking, he developed his interest in carborundum etchings which enabled him to build up a 3 dimensional surface on the plate, applying layers of paste and iron filings as if working with clay. He set up studio in London in the early 80's and produces his ceramic works and carborundum plates printing them himself. He finds inspiration in medieval legends - in the crafts, woodwork, pottery, masonry and tapestries of that era. His images concern a world of allegory and fables.

Pablo Picasso

picasso-pic.gif (9187 bytes) Born in Malaga, Spain on October 15,1881, Picasso received his first drawing lessons from his father, a drawing teacher, at La Coruna in 1891. In 1895 the family moved to Barcelona, where young Pablo brilliantly passed the entry examination to the famous La Llonga Art School. In 1897 he exhibited drawings in a cafe called Els Quatre Gats. In 1899, in Barcelona, he met Jamie Sabartes and did his first etching El Zurdo. The following year saw Picasso in Paris for the first time where he did drawings. In 1901 he did drawings in Madrid and
Paris and he started to sign his works 'Picasso', which was his mother's maiden name. In 1904 he settled definitively in Paris, where he rented a studio in the "Bateau Lavoir" and engraved The Frugal Meal. In 1905 he engraved Les Saltimbanques. In 1906 Picasso did dry points on celluloid and his first woodcuts. From 1909 to 1915 he produced Cubist prints, and from 1916 to 1920 he did Neoclassic, Ingresque etchings. 1919 was the year of his first lithographs; in 1927 he did etchings for Balzac's Le Chef-d'oeuvre inconnu and etchings for Ovid's Metamorphoses in 1930. In 1933 he started work on a set of 100 copperplates for Vollard (the Vollard Series). In 1934 he did Lysistrata and in 1935 the Minotauromachy. In 1937 he painted Guernica, engraved Franco's dream and Lie, the sugar aquatints for Buffon's Histoire Naturelle, and the portraits of Vollard that concluded the famous hundred plate series. Picasso reverted to Lithography in November 1945, producing his first color prints in that medium at Mourlot's. In 1948 he did Gongora and Reverdy's les Chant des Morts. In 1949 Picasso created the lithograph entitled The Dove of Peace; in 1950 the illustrations for Cesaire's Corps Perdui; in 1952 the aquatints, Woman at the Window. From 1952 to 1957 came his aquatints, line engravings and lithographs (the Jacqueline series), and in 1958 his first color linocuts. IN 1959 he did Tauromachy series and linocuts. From 1960 to 1967 he did aquatints, etchings, dry points and line engravings. In 1968 from March 16 to October 5, three weeks before his 87th birthday, he did 357 etchings, line engravings, dry points, mezzotints and aquatints. No other artist has more radically changed the nature of art. Most museums of modern art throughout the world have examples of his work in their collections.
